Dapo Torimiro From Lagos Dreams to Global Music Greatness

Aug 28, 2023

The name Dapo Torimiro is revered in Nigerian music circles. As part of a collective at the turn of the century, he was inventive with songwriting, production, and delivery. More than 20 years later, he’s held in similar esteem – if not to a greater extent – in music circles in America. He has been the soundtrack to countless records, deploying his vast cache of artistic brilliance to pop and R&B greatness. Little wonder that he’s been sought out by musicians that are regarded as global superstars, including Frank Ocean, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, and even icons such as Toni Braxton, Babyface, and the dearly departed Aretha Franklin.

Dapo’s discography is as extensive as his influence is far-reaching.

But before he became this globally successful figure, Dapo Torimiro was a Lagos-born-and-raised youngster who was surrounded by an eclectic yet sophisticated music collection: his father played everything from Fuji music to Jazz to pop, apala, soul, disco, and everything in between. Growing up in 1980s’ Lagos meant that he was exposed to a cultural heritage that is unlike any other and it helped greatly that when he was a university student in the same city, modern contemporary music was emerging from the youth culture that drove societies. Along with his friends Lara George, TY Bello, and Emem Ema; he formed the group KUSH which elevated what it means to be a young musician in Nigeria. That aura of greatness has only grown more potent around Dapo since then.

Olatunji Oke, the editor-in-chief, Indicator Magazine spoke at length with Dapo Torimiro and he touched on several subjects ranging from his background as a “Lagos boy”, the continued global acceptance of Nigerian music, and his plans to collaborate with the breakout stars from his home country.

Question: As someone whose foray into music started primarily in Nigeria with your college friends, how would you describe your journey from being a university singer to the iconic figure you are now?

Dapo Torimiro: My journey from being a university singer, musician, and producer in Nigeria to becoming the person I am today has been an incredible and transformative experience. It all started with my passion for music, which led me to collaborate with my college friends and form bands and singing groups. We worked tirelessly, honing our skills, and performing at various local venues. This period was crucial in shaping my musical abilities and helped me develop a strong foundation.

After gaining recognition in Nigeria, I was fortunate enough to have opportunities that allowed me to showcase my talent on a larger scale. I believe my relentless dedication, perseverance, and commitment to my craft played a significant role in my journey. It wasn’t an easy path, but I remained focused, continuously pushing myself to improve and evolve as an artist and producer.

Moving beyond Nigeria, I seized the opportunity to explore the global music industry. This involved relocating to the United States where I encountered new challenges and a different music landscape. However, my Nigerian roots and the diverse musical influences I had embraced provided a unique perspective that resonated with audiences worldwide.

This journey has been a remarkable adventure, and I’m grateful for every step along the way.

Question: Most Nigerian fans remember you primarily for your work with the group KUSH, which has been 20 years now. What are your memories of that era?

Dapo Torimiro: The era of KUSH holds a special place in my heart. It was a time of immense creativity, collaboration, and growth. Being a member of KUSH allowed me to work closely with immensely talented women including Lara George, TY Bello, and Emem Ema. We were pioneers, blending elements of R&B, Afrobeat, and gospel music, which was a novel concept at the time. I have fond memories of our studio sessions, where we poured our hearts and souls into creating music that spoke to people. The camaraderie among the group members was incredible, and we shared a common vision to make a significant impact in the music industry.

Looking back, I’m filled with nostalgia and a sense of pride for the milestones we achieved together.

Question: Given your experience of making music in Nigeria back then when the industry didn’t have the current investment and structure, what were the things missing that you felt were essential to the development, and are you seeing them now?

Dapo Torimiro:Making music in Nigeria then was undoubtedly challenging as the industry lacked certain crucial elements for development. One of the most significant factors was the need for proper investment and infrastructure. Many talented artistes struggled to access resources such as quality recording studios, professional equipment, and music education.

Additionally, there was a limited understanding of the business side of the music industry, including contracts, royalties, and intellectual property rights. This lack of structure made it difficult for artists to thrive financially and hindered the growth of the industry as a whole.

However, I’m pleased to say that the Nigerian music industry has come a long way since then. There has been a significant increase in investment, improved infrastructure, and greater awareness of the importance of intellectual property rights. These advancements have created a more conducive environment for artistes to thrive and have contributed to the global recognition of Nigerian music.

Question: Are there elements from being in the music industry at that time that proved helpful when you moved to the US?

Dapo Torimiro: The experience of being in the music industry in Nigeria during that time has indeed been helpful in my transition to the US. The Nigerian music industry taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic. These traits are essential in any competitive industry, and they have helped me navigate the challenges and seize opportunities in the global music scene. Furthermore, the diverse musical influences I gained from Lagos, Nigeria have been invaluable. The fusion of African rhythms, melodies, and storytelling techniques with other genres has allowed me to bring a unique perspective to my work. This fusion has been well-received globally, contributing to my success as a producer and musician.

Question: Having worked extensively in the R&B scene with everybody from Toni Braxton to Jordin Sparks, Brandy, Justin Beiber, and many others, what has that meant for you regarding career fulfilment and professional success?

Dapo Torimiro:Working extensively in the R&B, Pop, and other genres, and collaborating with renowned artistes like the ones you listed above, has been an incredible journey of career fulfilment and professional success.

These collaborations have not only allowed me to work with exceptional talents but also provided opportunities to contribute my creativity and expertise to their projects. The fulfilment comes from the creative process itself, witnessing the evolution of a song from inception to completion.

Collaborating with artistes of diverse backgrounds and styles has expanded my artistic horizons and challenged me to bring out the best in myself.

Professional success, on the other hand, comes from the recognition and validation of my work by both the industry and the audience.

Question: Right now, African music, particularly the contemporary Nigerian Afrobeats, is the most desired sound in the world today. What are your thoughts on the global explosion of Nigerian music?

Dapo Torimiro: The global explosion of Nigerian music, particularly the rise of Afrobeats, is a phenomenon that fills me with immense pride and excitement. It’s a testament to the incredible talent, creativity, and authenticity of Nigerian artistes. The music has resonated with people across cultures and borders, creating a universal appeal.

The global acceptance of Nigerian music has also opened doors for collaborations and cultural exchanges. It has created a platform for African artistes to share their stories, culture, and perspectives with the world. This explosion has not only elevated the status of Nigerian musicians but has also inspired a new generation of artistes and brought recognition to the entire African music scene.

Question: Have you kept a pulse on happenings back in Nigeria and who have you paid attention to?

Dapo Torimiro: As someone deeply connected to my Nigerian roots, I make a conscious effort to keep a pulse on happenings back in Nigeria. I stay updated on the latest trends, emerging artists, and industry developments. I believe it’s important to remain connected to the Nigerian music scene because it continues to be a significant source of inspiration for me.

The global music industry itself has seen immense technological advancements that make the music-making process easier and more easily distributed.

Question: How much of this is a plus versus a disadvantage, seeing as the barrier to entry is lower than ever?

Dapo Torimiro: The technological advancements in the music industry have undeniably had a profound impact, both positive and negative. On the plus side, these advancements have democratized the music-making process, allowing more people to create and distribute their music independently. The barriers to entry have lowered, giving artistes greater control over their careers and enabling them to reach a global audience more quickly and easier.

However, this ease of access has also resulted in an over-saturation of content and increased competition. With the influx of music being released, it can be challenging for artistes to stand out and gain recognition.

Additionally, the value of music has been diluted due to the prevalence of streaming platforms and the shift toward digital consumption. Overall, I believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The key lies in artistes adapting to the changing landscape, leveraging the available technology, and finding innovative ways to connect with their audience while maintaining the highest artistic standards.

Question: How much of Dapo Torimiro the person is a global citizen and how much is still Nigerian?

Dapo Torimiro: As an individual, I consider myself a global citizen with strong Nigerian roots. My Nigerian heritage is an integral part of my identity and has significantly influenced my music and creative journey. It’s the foundation from which I draw inspiration and the source of the rich cultural tapestry that shapes my artistry. At the same time, my experiences in different parts of the world have broadened my perspectives and allowed me to appreciate the diversity of cultures and music. I embrace the global influences that have shaped my sound and constantly seek opportunities to collaborate and create music that transcends borders.

There appears to be an African renaissance in the US that has seen a lot of the black communities develop relationships with the homeland. Why do you think this is important to do?

The African Renaissance in the US where the black community develops relationships with the homeland is of utmost importance. It signifies a reconnection with one’s roots, culture, and heritage. For too long, African culture was often overlooked or marginalized, and this renaissance allows for a celebration and appreciation of the contributions made by the African Diaspora. By fostering relationships with the homeland, the black community gains a deeper understanding of its history, traditions, and cultural expressions. This connection provides a sense of belonging, identity, and pride. It also opens doors for collaborations, artistic exchanges, and economic opportunities to benefit African and African Diaspora communities.

After all these years that you’ve been a major producer of global hits, what still drives you today?

Knowing that my work can evoke emotions, bring joy, comfort, or inspire someone is incredibly fulfilling. It’s the fuel that keeps me going, even during challenging times.

Additionally, the ever-evolving nature of the music industry itself is a driving force. There are always new sounds, genres, and technologies emerging, which present endless possibilities for creativity and innovation. Embracing these changes, staying at the forefront of musical trends, and pushing artistic boundaries excites me and keeps me motivated to continually grow and evolve as a producer.
